Fear not! Despite Open Days being cancelled across the country, Ciara and Lucy are bringing the Open Days to you through a series of ‘Open Pods’ where they interview Medical Students from different universities across the UK. They ask all the important questions that will help you make an informed decision as to which Medical School is right for you. Listen for fantastic insight from students who know what they are talking about. And the best part… you don’t even need to leave your house!
In this episode, we interview Chris about what it’s like to be a medical student at the University of Bristol.
Listen to hear all about how the course is delivered, including intercalation and clinical placements, as well as what general student life is like. Most importantly, get some handy tips, tricks and all the insider knowledge you need to tailor your application to the University of Bristol!

Hello, Chris here! This comment is in response to any questions that I’ve had already.
*Essays and student choice*
We get about one assessed essay per year, usually in the style of a literature review or writing up research if you have done that in a ‘Student Choice’ module, so they’re typically few and far-between. Student Choice is where you pick an area of interest to you at a designated spot in the year, so some Year 2 students ended up in the Alps looking at physiology, some in the Bristol research labs looking at pharmacokinetics, or in radiology departments in hospital and so forth.
*Interview selection*
It’s also worth noting that, at present, Bristol selects for interview using a 100% UCAT weighting, so long as you meet the minimum academic requirements (see admissions statement on the website), your UCAT score will decide whether you get offered an interview or not. Personal statements aren’t used unless there’s a tie-break at the interview stage.
Hope that helps!
That’s really useful, thanks so much!
Hi Lucy and Ciara, thank you so much for doing this podcast, it has been so useful! I was wondering if you would be covering the university of Manchester and Liverpool too?
