Very informative podcast, thank you! Are placement travel and accommodation costs covered by the university?
Yes so accommodation and travel is essentially provided for you free of charge.
You will be based in South Wales (so Cardiff, Newport, Bridgend or Merthyr) for placements in 1st and 2nd year one day a week and a bus will take you and bring you back.
Third year onwards you can be more further afield and that is when they provide accommodation. Travel is again provided free to hubs in South Wales AM and PM and to “away placements” like North/Mid/West at the beginning and end of the the block. Travel when you are away is not necessarily provided, but most placements you are living onsite at the hospital so not a problem. If you did have to travel they usually sort taxis with no problems (in my experience).
The only time I’ve had to pay for travel (not including when I chose to drive) is when you are in Cardiff and it’s not a walkable distance. They usually don’t refund public transport within Cardiff even though it’s a very big place which is a little cheaky as bus tickets etc do add up but that’s their policy.
In reality, when you get to 3rd year either yourself or someone you know usually drives, this is what most people do as it’s easier than the buses but you won’t be refunded petrol costs as there is the alternative (not until NHS bursary in 5th year anyway).
I hope this all makes sense! If you have any more questions please don’t hesitate to ask 🙂
Hello, may I know how are international applicants selected as they don’t have gcse grades?
Hi Katelyn. I believe they look at your International Baccalaureate grades but I do not know what exact grades they require. It’s best to email medadmissions@cardiff.ac.uk and they’ll give you the most accurate information!
