International Summer School Frequently Asked Questions
What should I pack for Summer School?
We have made a Student Handbook offering advice on what to bring and what not to bring with you. You will receive all necessary information needed before arrival.
When can I arrive and depart?
MONDAY is your arrival day, and the following MONDAY is your departure day. So please ensure you plan your journey accordingly. No lessons are planned on those designated days.
Which airports can I arrive at and depart from?
Scotland: Glasgow and Edinburgh only
London: Heathrow and Gatwick only
Please contact us if you cannot find suitable flights for those two airports. We will ask you to complete our Airport Arrival & Departure form closer to your course start date, so we can make the necessary arrangements. Please get in touch with us if you are arriving by train.
Will I be able to access my bedroom immediately?
There is no standardised check-in time, so this would depend on the time of day of your arrival. We will endeavour to show you to your room as soon as possible.
Will I be sharing my bedroom with other students?
No, all accommodation is single sex en-suite (with a private bathroom).
How far is my accommodation from teaching facilities?
You will stay in a university campus residence located within a walking distance from teaching facilities.
Can I enrol on the course without accommodation?
No, all students attending residential Summer School will be staying on campus.
Is there a bedroom damage deposit?
No. When you arrive you will be asked to check your room and report any issues/damages via an online form, so we can inform the host institution.
Students are liable and will be charged for damages such as graffiti, damage to room appliances, loss of key or additional cleaning costs as a result of messiness. The cost of damages in common areas will be charged to relevant groups of students unless an individual accepts responsibility.
What time is catering provided?
You can expect to eat between 8am – 9am for breakfast, 1pm- 2pm for lunch, and 6.30pm – 7.30 pm for dinner.
Is there additional food available outside of the scheduled catering times and facilities?
University campus facilities include a range of coffee shops, convenience stores, and vending machines should you wish to purchase any additional food, drink or snacks outside of the scheduled catering times.
Do students have use of the communal common areas in their accommodation?
There is a common area on each floor, where you can relax with your friends. Please note that you are not allowed to cook in communal common areas.
Does Summer School provide Halal meals?
Yes, you can specify it at the point of application.
Does Summer School provide vegetarian meals?
Yes, we provide a vegetarian option at every meal.
I have a food allergy, can you cater to my needs?
We are happy to try and accommodate all dietary requirements. Please contact our SAS team to confirm that a catering plan can be provided at the point of application.
What activities will I be doing in the evenings?
We offer a full programme of social and sports events to give you an opportunity to switch off and spend time with like-minded individuals, all included in your course fees. The ability to successfully manage your work-life balance is an important skill to learn as an aspiring medical student and a future doctor. Some of the activities include sports evenings, film night, escape room challenge, quiz night, etc.
Are students allowed any free time during Summer School?
We ask students not to leave campus grounds during Summer School. The university campus is large enough for students to walk around, with plenty of social spaces to meet and relax.
What are my curfew hours?
Students are expected to return to their rooms by 10pm, regardless of age. After curfew, students are forbidden from leaving the halls of residence.
Is there a mix of nationalities in the classes?
Yes, you will study alongside British and international students from different countries.
Will I receive any certification?
You will receive a Certificate of Completion at the end of the Summer School week.
Are there Summer School rules and where can they be found?
You are required to read and sign our Student Code of Conduct declaration to register for Summer School. This information can also be found on our Safeguarding policy page.
What happens if I break Summer School rules?
Students who disobey the rules will be disciplined according to Medic Mentor’s disciplinary procedure, details of which can be found in our Safeguarding policy.
Does the course come with insurance?
Students travelling from overseas (non-UK residents only) are covered by Guard.me Medical & Travel Insurance policy included in the International Summer School fees.
I am worried about safety on the Internet. What level of access will students have?
Wi-Fi is provided to students on university campus, however please note that this network is via the host institution. Medic Mentor delivers an internet safety briefing as part of the student induction.
What will happen if I get ill?
If you have an accident or require any first aid, you can ask any staff member to help you – they will contact one of our First Aiders who will treat you in the first instance. In an emergency, we can call an ambulance.
If you need to see a doctor, we will help book an appointment for you. Students travelling from overseas (non-UK residents only) are covered by Guard.me Medical Insurance policy included in the International Summer School fees. International students residing in the UK for six months or longer are eligible for free National Health Service (NHS) treatment. We recommend that all students travelling from EU member countries bring their EHIC medical card with them.
Please note that students are responsible for their own medication and must take care to properly store any such medication. You can bring or purchase basic non-prescription medicines, for example Paracetamot and throat lozenges, on campus. Students must disclose if they are regularly taking medication or have any allergies or medical conditions at the point of application.
Are laundry services available and will I be assisted?
There is a launderette on campus for you to wash your clothes. Medic Mentor staff will show you how to use the washing and drying machines and help you if necessary. The laundry costs are not included in your course fees.
What kind of security is there at Medic Mentor Summer School?
Medic Mentor provides supervision on all sites. Our resident mentors are always on hand to assist students throughout the day and night. Additional security measures provided by the host institution. All students have access to a 24-hour emergency phone line.
What is a staff per student ratio?
6:1
Is a multi-faith prayer room available on campus?
Yes. If you would like to pray at the multifaith centre or if you would like to visit a place of worship during your stay with us, please speak to our staff who can help organise this for you.
Is there a specific check-out time for vacating the bedrooms on the day of departure?
Yes, check out is normally at 9.00 am. Should you have a late flight, we will endeavour to make you comfortable in communal areas until your departure time.
